Acceptance of Terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Portfolio Desktop computer program ("Software") and the marketing and documentation website located at this domain ("Website").
By downloading, installing, compiling, copying, or using the Software, or by browsing the Website, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not install, copy, or use the Software or Website.
Software License and Permitted Use
The Software is open-source software distributed under the terms of the MIT License. You have permission to:
- Use the Software for personal, private, or commercial portfolio recordkeeping.
- Inspect, audit, modify, and build the source code from official repositories.
- Distribute copies of the Software in compliance with the MIT License copyright notice.
You agree not to use the Software or Website for any unlawful purpose, or in violation of any applicable local, national, or international financial laws.
Local Data Sovereignty and Privacy
Portfolio Desktop operates as an offline-first desktop tool. All portfolio holdings, cash amounts, transaction histories, notes, and local configuration files remain stored on your personal device:
~/.config/portfolio/data/portfolio.sqlite
- We do not operate remote servers to collect your personal investment records.
- We do not require an account, user registration, or cloud login.
- Anonymous product telemetry is opt-in and disabled by default. When enabled, telemetry sends anonymous application interaction counters only. Telemetry never transmits ticker symbols, financial values, balances, or personal identification.
Market Data and Third-Party Feeds
To calculate current portfolio valuations, the Software sends direct queries from your device to Yahoo Finance and public currency exchange services.
- Quotes, charts, foreign exchange (FX) conversion rates, and indicator calculations are subject to delay and market inaccuracies.
- We do not guarantee the completeness, timeliness, or accuracy of market data provided by third parties.
- Your device transmits ticker symbols directly to external market endpoints. You are responsible for your network access and any third-party data terms.
Artificial Intelligence and LLM Integrations
The Software provides on-demand portfolio briefings using Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Local Runtimes: When using local models (such as Ollama or llama.cpp), your analysis data does not leave your personal computer.
- Cloud Providers: When using cloud providers (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, Gemini, OpenRouter, or DeepSeek), your device communicates directly with the provider using your private API key.
- AI-generated reports are synthetic text summaries produced by probabilistic models. You must not interpret AI outputs as certified audits or investment recommendations.
No Financial, Investment, or Legal Advice
The Software and Website exist exclusively for informational and personal recordkeeping purposes. Nothing in the Software, reports, calculations, or website content constitutes:
- Investment advice or a recommendation to buy, hold, or sell any security.
- Legal, taxation, accounting, or regulatory counsel.
- An offer or solicitation to conduct transactions in financial instruments.
Financial investments involve substantial risk of loss. Past market performance does not predict future returns. Always consult a qualified, licensed financial professional before making financial commitments.
Broker CSV Import and Calculation Accuracy
The Software includes import parsers for multiple broker CSV export formats.
- Broker file formats and column layouts may change without notice.
- You must inspect and verify all imported transactions, share quantities, fees, and currency conversions.
- The developers are not responsible for calculation errors resulting from corrupted files, unparsed transactions, or manual database changes.
